Laikipia Governor opens new Sipili School for the Deaf dormitory

Sunday marked a new dawn for Sipili School for the Deaf. Laikipia Governor together with members of Laikipia County Assembly were at the school to officially open a new dormitory.

Speaking during the event the school Principal Godfrey Gikunda thanked Father Edward for constructing the dormitory. Gikunda said that the school faces many challenges and urged the local community to equip the dormitory.

“Our school is a friendly place and all what you come in contact with here has a heart touching effect. The place is child friendly and our approach is to develop these learners who are sensory different in a holistic way,” said Gikunda.

“In our strategic plan, our target is to make this school a centre of excellence in this region,” he said.
Gikunda informed those present that the school caters for learners from the whole of Laikipia County, part of Nyandarua, Nakuru, Baringo and Samburu counties. Currently the school has an enrollment of seventy eight (78) learners spread from infant class to vocational level.

BOG Chairman Mr. Kimathi requested for funds to build a Kitchen and to buy a school bus. Kimathi said that the school management normally uses their own money to fund programs. He appealed to the County government to employ a secretary and an accounts clerk for the school.

BOG members requested the local community to sponsor learners in the school. They thanked various sponsors in the school like the Catholic Church and Kuki Gallman for their contributions towards the running of the school. They also asked the Government to consider the school for free school feeding program.

Area Education Officer (AEO) Peter Keru informed the school management that they are currently trying to look at staffing problems at the school. He also said that they are working on ways of ensuring that free feeding program is implemented in the school.

Ol-Moran member of County Assembly Dan Ndegwa, called for more funds to be allocated to the school.Ndegwa said that the challenges that the school face are immense. He said that he has tried his best to ensure that development is brought to the school.

“Sipili school for the Deaf will be a sample of my achievements,” said Ndegwa.

Laikipia County Assembly speaker Patrick Mariru, promised those present that the County government will pass legislation once they are brought on the floor of the house. 
Patrick also said that each member of  Laikipia County assembly will contribute Funds for the school.

Laikipia Governor Joshua Irungu informed those present that it is the duty of the County Government to serve everyone in the county. He also said that it is their duty to ensure that students live a descent life. Governor Irungu added that they will help the school financially. 

“I would want to make a difference in the County Government. This will be a peaceful, modern county that will serve as an example to other county Governments,” said Governor Irungu.
“Visiting the school has enabled me to see the challenges that the school face. It has been an eye opener,” added Governor Irungu.
 An impromptu Harambee was finally held to meet costs that the school currently faces.
